Mindfulness and poetry afternoon

Is it for me?

A perfect tonic to darkening days and the sense of winter arriving, our Mindfulness and Poetry afternoon is for anyone needing to pause and give the gift of self-care. This accessible meditation session (all profits to charity) is open to anyone wishing to spend uninterrupted time tuning in to mind, body and breath, with poetry readings helping to open our awareness to different perspectives. A range of options will be given for posture, and practices will include lying down meditations (including yoga nidra - deep guided relaxation). Complete beginners to mindfulness and meditation most welcome, as are more experienced practitioners looking for a re-fresh.

As the clocks go back for the winter months, join Lucia for a nurturing 90-minute charity fund-raising afternoon of mindfulness, poetry and super-relaxing yoga nidra. We hope you'll feel centred, rested and inspired by the end of the class.

Everyone is welcome, from total beginners to those with an established mindfulness practice (please just be aware that there are four flights of steep stairs to climb to reach the studio!).

The secular practice of mindfulness - which can also be translated as 'presence' or 'awareness' - invites us to gently drop out of our heads, into our bodies and senses.

We invite ourselves out of our restless default 'doing' mode, which involves constant analysing, and busyness, into a far less stressful 'being' mode, in which we gently notice what's arising, and allow ourselves to stop and permit things to be as they are.

Reciting accessible poetry is often an integral part of the way that mindfulness is taught, as it can be a wonderful aid to move from always-on 'doing' to simply 'being'. Like mindfulness, poetry invites us into a different, wider perspective, inviting us to move away from over-analysing and over-thinking, towards feeling and sensing.

In this significant transition, our always-on brains can move from our super-alert default Beta brain waves, to slower Alpha brain waves, often described as a 'relaxed awareness'.

In this mindfulness and poetry session, the invitation will be to absorb some poetry with this different feeling, sensing ear – not so much to understand or analyse but to feel and experience the words, and any feelings or imagery the poems conjure up. This process can often help widen our perspective and allow us to feel less alone.

There will be an opportunity to share some poetry with the group – but only if you wish!

The session may include some VERY gentle mindful movement (which can be done sitting or lying down) and will conclude with some super-restful, powerful yoga nidra. Yoga nidra is a powerful form of guided relaxation and meditation.

Yoga at the Mill co-founder and yoga and meditation teacher, Lucia has recently qualified to teach yoga nidra, and can't wait to deliver this session, which will combine several of her passions: mindfulness (which she has trained with Bangor University to deliver), yoga nidra and fund-raising for animals.

We'd love for you to join us - £20 for the session. 100% of profits will go straight to destitute animals in need. Booking in right-hand column.
