About us: Yoga at the Mill

Holding eight-to-ten students per class, the experience of practising yoga or meditation in our quiet and central, dedicated studio is refreshingly different from the environment of a large leisure centre or church hall.

A friendly and dedicated space

Yoga At The Mill's friendly, small-group atmosphere allows for plenty of individual, personal attention from the teacher. There is a relaxed, personal feel to our classes; it is common for friendships to be made and for students to enjoy a coffee or lunch together at The Mill's downstairs cafe!

All yoga mats, blankets, lavender eye pillows, bolsters and blocks are provided for classes, so you need only bring yourself. We suggest wearing comfortable, stretchy clothing, such as tracksuit bottoms or leggings.

All our teachers share a genuine passion for yoga and meditation that extends far beyond the physical benefits of these ancient practices.

Our approach

Our approach to teaching yoga aims to honour its ancient origins: that is, the physical postures as one part of a powerful, holistic mind/body system that also incorporates meditation, deep relaxation and even lifestyle choices.

Along with the small group classes and central setting, our approach to teaching distinguishes us from other local centres: our intention is to teach yoga with depth, integrity and sensitivity. Even in a strong flow class, we take our time to teach the fundamentals of safe alignment, so the postures are as integral as possible, and the yoga can be experienced as it was originally intended: as an awareness practice, rather than as a set of exercise moves, performed without awareness.

Our approach to teaching meditation is similarly undogmatic: we invite students to reserve preconceptions about aims, posture, or 'clearing the mind of thoughts', and instead bring an open mind to the practice.

Yoga at the Mill is run by Lucia and Darren, who, between them, have almost 40 years' experience of practising yoga around the world, including having completed intensive training with some of the world's leading teachers.

Lucia is currently studying for an MSc in Mindfulness Based Approaches at Bangor University, and is also passionate about the transformative benefits - including relief from chronic stress and anxiety - of Mindful Living for everyone.

Lucia and Darren also run the highly regarded healthy holiday company, Satvada Retreats, specialising in retreats to the UK, Morocco, Croatia and France. All students currently taking a weekly (or more) class are entitled to 10% off any of Satvada's retreats running over more than a two days. See our retreat schedule for our full list of retreats

Facilities on site.

We provide all equipment for your yoga class - these range from yoga mats, to blocks, bolsters, straps and blankets. So, unless prefer to use your own equipment, you simply need to turn up.

After class, until 4pm daily, you have the option to treat yourself to a lunch and/or tea at the Mill's own onsite cafe.

There is plenty of free parking at the building, and you do not need a car to get here: we are an easy 10 minute walk from the town centre, along the river, or around 15-20 minutes' walk from Chelmsford's train and bus stations.
