Beginners Yoga

Is it for me?

We are passionate that yoga is for everyone, regardless of age or background. If you have tried yoga before - at a gym or health club, for example - and thought it wasn't for you, you may be pleasantly surprised! We take an accessible, mindful approach that is in line with yoga's ancient origins as a meditation practice. Our small group beginners' classes are friendly and supportive, and typically comprise people who are brand new to yoga as well as those who have been attending beginners' sessions for a little while. We recommend attending beginners' classes for months, or years, before considering moving to a strong beginners/intermediate session. :)

Why take a Beginners Yoga class with us?

Are you looking for a supportive yoga class suitable for beginners? We have daily classes (apart from Sundays) in our friendly yoga and mindfulness studio in central Chelmsford.

Beginner yoga students
Our classes are typically (and unusually) capped at ten students, ensuring plenty of opportunity for individual attention, and an informal atmosphere.

Teachers are warm, welcoming, sensitive and highly trained. All classes are taught in a mindful manner, which allows you to progress at your own pace, without pressure.

Whilst our beginners sessions vary in style and approach, according to the teacher's background, they have a common goal of teaching the fundamentals of yoga in a safe, attentive and non-judgemental way, allowing for you to become confident in your yoga practice over time.

Many of our beginners yoga classes are suitable for those who are a little older, as well as for those with some physical limitations, and for students simply wishing to gain confidence before progressing to a stronger class.

Class structure

Classes typically run in rolling six-week blocks, giving you time gain familiarity with the practice and the chance to try another time or teacher to see what suits you best. However, yoga is a multifaceted practice; we recommend attending multiple beginners blocks (normally for a year or more) before considering moving to a more advanced class.

Beginners' classes are typically formed of those starting yoga for the first time and those who have been practising for a little while. If you would like to start from scratch, with others who are also starting yoga for the first time, you might consider joining one of our popular four-week Complete Beginners Yoga courses, currently running on Saturday mornings and Tuesday evenings.

Class outline

  • Introduction to yoga postures (asana) - Yoga postures are fundamental to our beginners yoga classes. We will take time to slowly learn and integrate a number of yoga postures into our practice.
  • Introduction to breathwork (pranayama) - By managing the breath we are able to promote feelings of relaxation and wellbeing.
  • Meditation - In many of our classes we introduce meditation which can help still the mind and promote feelings wellness and reduce feelings of stress and anxiety. We spend time on our final relaxation (savasana), as a key part of yoga practice.
